Mesha: An Essential Tool for GPA-Based Language Learning

Mesha is a thoughtfully designed application aimed at supporting learners in acquiring new languages through the Growing Participator Approach (GPA).

This initial version of Mesha is available free of charge, allowing users to add up to 100 items. For additional capacity, users can purchase in-app upgrades or opt for the fully unlocked version available here: http://plus.mesha.tk.

Creating Collections

Mesha streamlines the process of recording language learning sessions with your instructor or language partner. During a GPA session, simply create a 'Collection' by tapping the '+' button on the home screen. Then, add various items such as photographs of objects, sketches, texts, or audio recordings.

Recording Audio

To record audio for your items, open the collection in Slideshow Mode by tapping an item or using the slideshow button. Mesha features two distinct recording buttons: a Short Recording Button for single words and phrases, and a Long Recording Button for full sentences, stories, explanations, or examples.

For basic vocabulary entries, use the Short Recording Button on the left. Your instructor can pronounce the word or phrase multiple times, after which you can proceed to the next item, which will be recorded automatically.

For items requiring detailed explanations or context, utilize the Long Recording Button on the right. This is especially useful when using resources like Lexicarry or picture books without text, where narration in complete sentences is necessary.

If during a story or explanation you encounter an unfamiliar word, tap the Embed button to add a new item at that point. These embedded items are stored within the same collection and can be reviewed later in Slideshow Mode, with their waveform visible alongside the related audio segment.

Vocab Review Mode

The Vocab Review feature allows targeted practice of individual vocabulary items. By tapping 'Vocab Review' at the bottom right of the home screen, learners can test themselves on words at spaced intervals that increase with correct responses. Initially, learners hear the word and see its associated image or explanation. With subsequent reviews, only audio cues are provided.

If a learner recognizes a word, they swipe right to advance it to a higher 'Spaced Repetition Box'. If unsure or needing reinforcement, they swipe left to play the explanation audio or view the image again. Correctly identified words are marked with a 'Box' icon, which adjusts their review frequency accordingly.

Progress statistics can be accessed to visualize learning patterns over time.

Story Review Mode

This mode facilitates immersive listening to recorded stories in the target language. Stories are defined as items with 'Long' audio recordings alone. After listening, users can swipe right or tap a tick icon to mark completion and schedule future reviews. The application preserves their position within each story if interrupted.

Initially, users listen to unreviewed stories; subsequently, Mesha presents stories due for review based on their recording order.
